History of a full harvest moon and hunter (Rare Blue Moon)
Mark your calendars now Witches if you haven’t! The first of October’s full Moons rises on Thursday, October 1st. October’s second full Moon rises on Samhain, Saturday October 31st. A full moon that falls on Samhain only happens once every nineteen years; the last one we had was in 2001 and prior to that was in 1944, and the next one will happen in 2039. In September or October for the first full moon after Mabon/ Autumn Equinox is given the name Harvest moon or Hunters moon. This year the second full moon in October will be the Hunters Blue Moon according to Native American names (second full moon in a calendar month) on October 31st. The first recorded celebration of Samhain was by the Celts over 2000 years ago and started at sundown which marked the rebirth of a new year.
On Samhain this year we are headed for a rare treat as the Blue moon falls on our Witches New Year. The October moon marks a final harvest of the growing season. The growing season can refer to metaphorical or physical harvest. Henceforth the name Harvest moon, as we are harvesting what we worked so hard to do or grow. Many pagans and witches see Samhain as the most important Sabbat of the wheel of the year. We celebrate it as our start of a new year, and know that on this magickal day the veil that separates our middle realm and the spirit realm is at its thinnest. Honor the dead, do spirit work (necromancy), protection work, celebrations, and spells that need a huge energy boost.
When two full moon occur within one month they carry energetic vibes of bold radical change, major energy, huge creativity, and psychic abilities are greatly enhanced. As they say, “Once in a blue moon” as these are rare and only happen once a year. Mark this date as something huge that you wish to work on, I know I am. Everything that you are and what you work on is heightened during a Blue Moon (a Full moon energy at the max level). Samhain marks the halfway point between the equinox (Mabon) and the Solstice (Yule) and thus is a Cross-Quarter Sabbat. When a Blue moon happens look to your natal chart for tips to unlock potentials.

The word Samhain is pronounced “Sow-in” according to Celtic traditions and means Summers End. We see the season of winter starting on November 1st and in Mexican traditions they see it as the Day of the Dead. The similarities are very true to the essence of Samhain and this day. The Christians felt that Samhain was a time that was evil and the dead spirits that ran amok on that day and created November 1st to be labeled All Saints day to clear and change the energy. Christianity has changed our pagan Sabbats by dates and names since when they tried to convert us. I feel that they fear what they don’t understand. Many have ignored the Church’s stance and still celebrate All Hollows Eve, another name for Samhain .
Some traditions include bonfires, feasts, divination, honoring our past Ancestors, and laying out and partaking in a dumb supper. (A silent meal with place settings for each member that past over into the Underworld). Create an ancestor Altar and change the offerings weekly for them, give them what they liked in the living middle realm (here on Earth). Dance, play music, cook together, have a party.
Just because we are living in a plague time doesn’t stop us from being a witch. Lay out food and drink outside your doorway as a appeasement to the spirits, or place a candle (or an electric candle) in the window to light the way for your ancestors. Samhain symbolizes hope and good tidings as well. Let go what does not serve your best interests. Heal and embrace change & transformation of you. Remember look to your natal chart for tips. Fear and self doubt blocks the law of attraction in your lives. Learn how to ground but be aware that on Samhain it may be harder or easier based on your chart. Dance around the bonfire (tradition) to bring forth the change of the year of the Season and wheel of the year. A circle is a very strong symbol of continuation and protection . Write down things that you wish to let go and toss into your bonfire or cauldron fire. Always practice safety with fire. Write down what you are grateful for and what you want to manifest in the New Year. Make a crystal grid with stones associated with Samhain to help generate power. Lastly enjoy you time however you choose to mark this magickal day.
